How to Care for Your Leather Creations – A Simple Guide

Leather is a timeless material—strong, stylish, and made to last. But like all well-loved things, it needs a little care to keep it looking its best. Whether you own a wallet, bag, journal cover, or one of my handcrafted leather dragons, here’s a simple guide to keeping your leather pieces in top condition.

1. Keep It Dry, but Not Too Dry

Leather and water don’t mix well. If your leather piece gets wet, pat it dry with a soft cloth and let it air dry naturally—never use direct heat like radiators or hairdryers, as

this can cause cracking. On the other and, leather shouldn’t be stored somewhere too dry, as it can become brittle over time.

2. Condition for Longevity

Just like skin, leather benefits from a little moisturising! Every few months, apply a small amount of leather conditioner with a soft cloth to keep it supple and prevent cracking. Make sure to test any product on a small hidden area first.

You can buy Quirky Hides leather conditioner straight from our shop. (insert link)

3. Keep It Clean – But Gently!

For day-to-day maintenance, a quick wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth will remove surface dirt. If deeper cleaning is needed, use a leather-specific cleaner, avoiding harsh

chemicals that can damage the finish.

4. Store It with Care

When not in use, store your leather item in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. If it’s a bag, wallet, or anything that holds shape, stuffing it lightly with tissue or fabric can help maintain its form.

5. Avoid Overloading

Leather is strong, but not indestructible. Overstuffing wallets, bags, or pouches can cause stretching and warping over time. Treat your leather pieces with care, and they’ll stay looking great for years.

6. Embrace the Patina

One of the best things about leather is that it develops a rich patina over time—this natural ageing process adds character and uniqueness to each piece. Rather than seeing small marks as flaws, embrace them as part of your leather’s journey!
